Summary of Service
Zig Zag provides a place of healing, support, and social action and change for young women aged 12-25 years. As a feminist service, we are committed to working alongside young women and acknowledging their expertise in their own lives. We acknowledge that social, political, cultural and economic contexts limit young women’s power, creating vulnerability and disadvantage.
In particular, Zig Zag provides services to young women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and young women who are survivors of sexual violence.
Zig Zag recognises the diversity amongst young women and we work in a way that promotes safety, and is collaborative, inclusive, supportive and respectful. Zig Zag is committed to ethical practice and a process of continuous reflection and development that is informed by young women, practice wisdom and shared knowledge
Programs and Initiatives
Sexual Assault Support Services
Young women can access short, medium or long term counselling depending on their needs and will be offered regular opportunities to review the counselling process to ensure that it is meeting their needs. Zig Zag offers counselling and group work services in Camp Hill, Zillmere and Inala.
Housing Support Services – Brisbane Southside
Zig Zag accommodation is for women only (with or without children), and is medium-term, which is 3-6 months. We do not have emergency accommodation so we are unable to provide housing straight away. At Zig Zag we provide supported accommodation which means young women who are housed with us will have a housing support worker to meet with regularly.
Community Education
Zig Zag is committed to community engagement in a range of ways whenever possible. Zig Zag can work with schools community groups and attend community events to provide education about the nature and incidence of sexual assault and its impacts on young women. With this, we aim to increase community awareness about the prevalence of sexual abuse and to help eliminate it.
